Who doesn’t salivate at the idea of a homegrown catcher who excels both offensively and defensively? Well, get your salivary glands revved, because Juan Uriarte is making his case as the next Mets potential catcher of the future. Of couse, next in line on the depth chart of legitimate catching prospects in the Mets system behind Tomas Nido, Uriarte broke out offensively last season as a 19 year old in the Appalachian League. Scalding the baseball to the tune of .305/.372/.455, Uriarte also shows strong defensive skills. There aren’t yet any glaring weaknesses in his defensive skill set, and he projects to be able to stay for some time behind the dish.
Now before we get carried away, Uriarte’s 2018 will be a challenge. He will likely get his first taste of full season ball with the Fireflies. We have seen young Mets backstops hit their way through rookie ball, only to stall out offensively at the next level (ahem, Ali Sanchez). But should Uriarte put forth a strong showing on both sides of the ball, we are going to see his name rocket up top prospect lists, Mets and otherwise.
