Signed by the Mets out of Venezuela in 2014 for $250K, Edgardo Fermin put his name on the map in Mets circles in 2017, after scuffling for two years prior in the Dominican Summer Leagues. The slightly built 19 year old came stateside to join the Kingsport Mets and showed some polish at the plate, slashing .352/.425/.451. The right-handed hitter showed good bat to ball skills, but little power is seen on the horizon. After a mid-season promotion to the Brooklyn Cyclones, Fermin struggled and hit .219 in only 73 at-bats.

Defensively, Fermin draws praise for smooth actions and good lateral movement, as he has played both spots in the middle infield. However, scouting reports hint at below average speed, which is not something that you want to see for his type of offensive profile. The challenge ahead for the still teen-aged Fermin, will be to add enough physicality, and begin to drive the ball for gap power. If he can combine that with his solid contact skills, he could profile as a quality second base, or utility infield type. Look for Fermin to head back to Brooklyn in June 2018 after extended spring training.
